Matagalpa-Masaya-Laguna Apoyo-Granada

hiking to Cerro Apante

27.02.15

12:30 Uhr Ankunft in Masaya ,
13:00 - 15:00 Uhr habe ich samt meinem Gepäck "sightseeing" betrieben. Vom Busterminal läuft man 30 Min.
Was gab es?
Also tu ich was gutes!! :-)

01.03.2015
Heute hab ich Müsli gegessen. Endlich mal wieder was anderes als Reis, Bohnen, Eier,...

February 27th 2015
After my arrival in Matagalpa I took a taxi (C $ 15) to my hosts place (Lucy and Felix, 2 volunteers from Germany who spend nine months here). Then I've went pretty soon for a short hike to Cerro Apante. It was a 1.5 hours hike to the lookout point in the middle of the solitude of nature :-) and about 1 hour hike to return.
Once at the top, I wanted to eat my lunch in peace. But after about 10 minutes, there came a group of young people (estimated at 12-14 years) - so no peaceful rest anymore! Then I went on and did not quite found the way back and then walked by some little village ... the people there probably had never seen a tourist! As they had spotted me, all disappeared into their homes ?? !!

3 "stupid" dogs bark at me and when I'm passing on those with a lot of distance and fear, they came and growled at me and tweaked me in the leg. Thank God, a woman came and has thrown with stones to the dogs, so they let go (with apologies to all dog lovers, but i was so thankful she helped me - i really was scared.) After that, I'm strolled through Matagalpa! There was not much to see! I've discovered in a supermarket lettuce. (C $ 6 = 0.20 €). Decided to go for a fresh salad this evening and picked up tomatoes and a cucumber and then I went back "home". First, showered, then organized my journey with lodging and buses. Matagalpa is a non touristic place and not many buses goes to the tourist destinations ... In the evening I talked to Lucy and Felix , exchanged stories and then I fallen into bed very tired around 9:30pm!

February 28th 2015
After getting up, I walked about 40 minutes to the bus terminal.
At 9:00am I took the bus from Matagalpa to Tipitapa (C$ 51), passed numerous coffee plantations. Impressive amounts. At 11:30am I arrived and was able to jump into the connecting bus to Masaya (C$ 10). at 12:30pm I arrived in Masaya.
I discovered the "City" with all of my luggage. From the bus station you walk like 30 min. to the Malecon (beach boardwalk) and gives you a beautiful view of the lagoon Masaya. Then there is only the tourist market for those who needs souvenirs!
Today I only had a mango for breakfast, I was really hungry and have finally eaten at 3pm. What did I eat? Typical delicious food: rice, beans, pork, fried banana and salad for C$ 70.

And at 4pm I took the one and only bus that goes directly down to the lagoon once a day (C$ 13). There I got a dorm at the "Peace Project Hostel" . It's a 4 bed dorm and I have it all bymyself for 8US $ / night. Gorgeous! And the money is donated to the education of poor children. So I do something good !! :-)

March 01st, 2015
Today I ate cereals. Finally something other than rice, beans, eggs, ... Then I skyped with my bf, I had to use the good Wifi connection:-)
Then I paddled with the kayak in the lagoon. It was very windy, not so easy to come back with that! Then I relaxed on the beach. There I met the 10-year-old Christofer and his 19 yo brother Carlos, who has been with their big sister (~ 30 yo) and their family / friends at the beach ... we almost talked about 2.5 hours in Spanish ... sometimes more and sometimes less good:-p and I let thm use the kayak. That was a highlight for the kids ... because normally it costs $ 10 / hour and in my hostel kayaks were included for guests! It was Sunday, so all the locals came to the lagoon ... at some point it was too crowded / noisy and I got back to the hostel and hang out in the hammock!
Breakfast here is recommended. But for dinner, you should go to a restaurant in the area. Since you have more choices. We have some "Howler" monkeys directly at the "House Tree". Totally cool. I really like it a lot here !! It is totally in tune with nature! Birds, squirrels, monkeys ... and a wonderful disgusting, huge, hairy spider sitting right outside the door! I thought I'm going to die, I'm freaking out! Thank God it was outside the door and I had plenty ways to escape.
Later I took a book from the library! The magical attraction ... A book felt right in my hands, I have to read it!
The book is called "Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart" by Carol Leonard! It's a true midwifery story.

March 02nd 2015
Today I treat myself with a bowl of cereal and then relaxed in the hammock with my book.
At 11:20am the bus to Granada came! (C$ 13, you take it to the intersection to Masaya and there you go into the bus to Granada for C$ 8). Once there, I went to Oasis hostel and got a bed in the dorm (US $ 9 with pancakes, water, tea and coffee - as much as you want), it has a swimming pool, hammocks and of course many tourists ....I have explored Granada, unfortunately, the fort is closed due to construction. And then I met Sindy here again, which is currently in Granada.
That's it for today.

Isla de Flores - Rio Dulce

02.02.15

February 2nd 2015
This morning we took a "Tuk-Tuk"-Taxi to the bus station! (Q5 / person with luggage). Once we've been there (8:30am) they told us that the 2nd class bus (Q75) does not leave until 10:30 am, but the 1st class bus immediately leaves (Q140).
We declined with thanks and now we had 2hours of waiting.... annoying!
We started to walk around and then we found another 2nd class bus that actually should have left at 8: 30am but still been there... The clocks in Latinamerica tick differently :-) (in our case it was a good thing) and it cost "only" Q65 - Perfect! At 9am we drove off and by 1pm we arrived in Rio Dulce! We have previously read a lot and found it anything but recommended! Again, everything is touristy and expensive! For this city we found an affordable hotel for Q125 / night (double room with bathroom ... You have to walk through the shower to go to the toilet - It has a curtain in front of it and you just hear EVERYTHING.). It's always noisy outside, because one of the longest bridges in Central America is here located and the entire truck traffic goes through the town! On the streets it is so busy with people, that how I imagine India :-p (never been there).

There are less noisy alternatives ... not necessarily more expensive, but can only be reached by boat. And the rides are expensive! Sindy and I spent the afternoon separated! I've went for a 3km walk to a castle (well, after about 1km, I got a "lift" on a motorcycle). Then I  visited "El Castillo de San Felipe". The castle is located on the Rio Dulce. It is very small, but the surroundings and the views are definitely worth a visit! You can also go for a swim (unfortunately I did not have a bikini with me). At the entrance is a cemetery ... here are the cemeteries on one hand very sad (only concrete blocks) but then mega cheesy colorful banners, garlands and flowers around it!
At the castle I have met "Harold". Now I have to give you a little insight into his life! Hard to say where exactly he comes from.He was born in Netherlands and grew up in New Zealand, has lived in Switzerland and now in Luxembourg.

He is 52 years old, already retired, childless and married! He travels every winter 3-5 months and his wife is still working (in his opinion, she will never want to retire, because then she has to go with him on these adventurous trips and tha doen't seem like to be her "thing" ... but she does every winter about 3-5 weeks of traveling with him). He is the oldest of 8 children and grew up very poor. Until he was 10 yo, the family has lived in 3 different countries! And once being a growing up, he can make good money -Thanks to the then rare job situation in the IT industry-. He told me that he has locked up 60-65% per year of his salery to go early in retirement! Respect! His hobbies: traveling and sports. He runs marathons, and was active in athletics (was at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in the 90s). So he traveled also a lot due sport.
So I had a companion for the 3km walk back from the castle. I had to walk pretty fast to keep up! :-)

In the evening we went to "Bruno's Restaurant" for dinner. There we met Harold again and gave him company! Since he began his trip in Panama, he was able to give us some information and show pictures of what is worth seeing! For dinner there was for me a large portion of spaghetti with vegetables, salad and garlic bread for "only" Q35. For lunch we already had a good sandwich for only Q7, we like these prices! Then we have the really expensive boat trip booked for tomorrow (Q200). This approach goes beyond the budget again! But no matter! I might be only once here and I can't  miss it! Sindy and I wanted to travel further separated from Wednesday and then meet again in Antigua. I want to see Guatemala City and she doesn't! But, I also want to see "Semuc Champey" - so again, changes plans and we decided to go there together and then to Antigua ... I do either a day trip to Guate or go then  for two days over there, before we go together again to El Salvador. Spontaneously, as always! In the late eve I sat back a little bit on the laptop to finally upload photos! :-) Here the Wifi goes super fast. Lucky me.

February 3rd 2015
Somehow I do not seem to need much sleep ... around 11pm I went yesterday to bed and at 3am I'm awake and not tired at all. I then run some "research" for the purpose of accommodation and what to see in Panama by the time my boyfriend Marci comes to visit me and accompanied me in my adventurous trip.
Then Sindy and I have found that we have no water. Something happened in the night. Early in the morning I've been to our "Amigo" and told him that we have no water - and thus no flush toilets: - / He did something and it worked again:-) Between 6 and 8am it rained heavily. But then the sun came out and it was all good, so good for the boat trip.! Although it has quite a short, light rain just at the beginning. But then it was really really hot.
It was a nice ride on the Rio Dulce. It's just a big river, which empties into the Caribbean Sea. We have seen an incredible number of birds and locals paddle their canoes to catch the fish or just go from A to B.
At the end of the river, there's a village / town called Livingston. We have seen it in about 20 minutes ...there's not much to see. And then we hang out at the beach and relaxed for about 2h until we had to return.

I was so happy that I'm supposed to be back in the afternoon and finally get to talk to my boyfriend on skype. It's not easy with the time differencce. But here the clocks tick differently. We arrived later than expected and the internet was not working. Yesterday I had it so praised. This was probably the error : - / Oh and today in the morning we (Sindy and I) had problems getting our money. And then I wanted to check it in the internet in the evening and the purpose of the Internet connection, there were log-in problems and now my account is frozen.
This
day started beautifully and now ending in chaos ... We'll see how this continues! I'm curious.
Now  we go for dinner and maybe a drink.T
hen sleep and tomorrow we will travel to Semuc Champey.
